CHAPTER I · THE INTAKE

The Quiet Index.

The archive closes in twenty minutes. A woman is waiting outside with one question: why does the official record say her family was transferred when nobody can find the destination?

“They told my grandmother the address was in the book. Then the book disappeared.”

The surviving records

Inspect the sources. A conclusion must be earned; the archive will not tell you which interpretation is safe.

Working evidence

What can you responsibly say?

You need two inspected sources and one supported connection before you can challenge the record.

CHAPTER II · THE MISSING PAGE

Someone knew the page was incomplete.

Jonas Reed, senior archivist, is the only person still working tonight. He has seen the conservation log. He has also been told never to discuss the missing page outside the institution.

“If you are asking whether the page was altered, the honest answer is yes. If you are asking who did it, I don't know.”

New evidence

The institutional choice

Jonas will open one restricted drawer. Your approach determines what he is willing to show.

CHAPTER III · THE NAME THAT WAS REMOVED

The missing destination was not the only thing erased.

The access register places one senior clerk beside the East Quay file on the night the catalogue was amended. It is evidence of access—not proof of authorship. Now the family is asking what you will publish.

“I can live with an answer that says we don't know. I cannot live with another lie that sounds certain.”
